About Us

UAL is the world’s sixth best University for Art and Design in the QS World University Rankings® 2018. Offering an extensive range of courses in art, design, fashion, communication and performing arts, UAL is the main talent pipeline to the UK’s creative industries.

About the Role

Central Saint Martins is a world-leading centre for arts and design education. Its reputation stems from the creative energy of its staff and students and the stellar achievements of its graduates nationally and internationally. The nine programmes at CSM explore the boundaries of their discipline. Students and staff are continually alert to new ideas, and are curious and restless in developing beyond the expected norms of their subject, so emerging work is at the forefront of its area. CSM sits at the heart of London’s creative scene, and of one of Europe’s most dynamic new culture and innovation quarters at King’s Cross, making the college increasingly important to London’s cultural life, and indicative of our general desire to open up CSM to as broad an audience as possible. Spatial Practices MA Cities is a new course that will be one of four courses within the Spatial Practices Programme at CSM. Spatial Practices has a growing reputation and profile for its socially-embedded and politically-engaged approach to architecture, urbanism and spatial design. Challenging the role of the professions and seeking out new agendas and methodologies for spatial practice that are engaged with the social, economic and political conditions of space, is central to the ethos of the programme and its courses. With the recent appointment of a new Programme Director, and the launch of new experimental post-graduate courses, this is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the future of Spatial Practices at CSM.

What You're Gonna Do

As Course Leader you will provide a stimulating and supportive environment for students and colleagues. You will be responsible for assuring the academic standards of the course and its delivery through your academic leadership and the effective management of resources. You will contribute actively as part of our team, sharing your knowledge with staff and students. Through your excellent professional networks, you will ensure the continuous development of the course through industry links and collaborations, by reflecting critically on broader contexts of spatial practice and educational provision internationally.

About You

We are looking for a highly motivated, skilled, enthusiastic and energetic individual with extensive experience in critical spatial practice at a range of urban scales. You will be committed to transformation and innovation in post-graduate education and its role in addressing contemporary contexts and challenges facing cities, towns and dense urban settlements across the globe. You will be someone who wishes to embrace the opportunities to work, share, and exchange knowledge and skills within this dynamic and creative arts and design practice environment, and contribute to the continued evolution of the Spatial Practice Programme and culture. You will have excellent leadership abilities, great communication skills and experience in building and nurturing strong and vibrant cultures of learning through a culture of empathy and criticality. Creative and highly motivated, you will have detailed knowledge and understanding of urban and city-making design practices and professional processes, and a keen awareness of contemporary concerns and debates within the professions of architecture, spatial planning, the built environment and the city. You will have a commitment to addressing issues of race, diversity and social inclusion, and the climate emergency, through creative and innovative pedagogy and projects. You will be regarded as a leading authority within your field and will hold both an Undergraduate and a Postgraduate Degree in Architecture, spatial design, planning or related fields. You will have considerable professional experience as well as academic experience, with an inventive approach to students’ learning experience and high aspirations for their achievement, their professional futures and the course’s advancement internationally.
