About us
The International Society for Urban Health (ISUH) was founded by The New York Academy of Medicine in 2002. It has become the only global non-governmental organization solely focused on advancing urban health and health equity by addressing the broader determinants of health. Through its annual global conference and program activities, the ISUH serves as a platform for interdisciplinary academic researchers and educators, practitioners and policymakers from multiple sectors in government and the private sector – NGOs and business – to learn from each other and advance evidence and action that improves urban health.

No matter where we are in the world, we all want the opportunity to live our fullest possible life. However, inequitable systems and institutions, in the US and around the globe, have driven vast disparities in #health and wellbeing. Many places are addressing these inequities head-on and developing solutions to dismantle barriers to health. A new report from RWJF looks at trends emerging across the globe, all of which have deep implications for health #equity in the US. And it spotlights innovative approaches other countries are taking to respond to these emerging areas. The report highlights six global health trends to watch, from India to Uruguay, Kenya to Singapore, and across the globe: - Growing calls for more #equitable care work - Greater longevity - Surge in digital health information impacting wellbeing - Compounding #housing crisis - Increasing risks to #nutrition security - Growing demands for healthy public spaces We can learn a great deal when we open ourselves up to ideas and experiences from outside our borders. Ever heard of the '15-Min City'? Listen to our brilliant partner and friend Ryan Smolar from PlacemakingUS and Long Beach Fresh talk about the many ways that the 15-min city concept can help achieve greater #health, both physical and mental, health #equity and #sustainable development outcomes for residents in #cities. We are grateful to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) for supporting our Accelerating City Equity (ACE) #ACE4equity work and for allowing us to gather so many inspiring lessons learned from across the world in order to help drive #HealthEquity back in the US. Thank you to the wonderful Karabi Acharya for standing behind us and for promoting our ACE stories globally. Curious to learn more about the '15-Min City' concept by Carlos Moreno from Sorbonne Université? Stay tuned for his upcoming book (foreword by Jan Gehl) coming out May 7! Browse through our Bright Spots Library and explore more Stories from the Field on our Accelerating City Equity Active-Learning Resource Center at: https://lnkd.in/eZsuT9bf Special thanks to our award-winning documentary film director Camilla Calamandrei for her incredible work as part of our ACE project!
🏗️Sustainable Development Spotlight! What if every resident in a community could easily access services–such as parks, grocery stores, libraries, and schools–in less than 20 minutes? What if neighborhoods in the U.S. had robust street life, allowing neighbors to bump into each other while walking to a market or sitting in a park? In my latest spotlight, gathered by the International Society for Urban Health (ISUH) team, Ryan Smolar of Long Beach Fresh and PlacemakingUS discusses the idea of the 15-minute city–a concept out of Paris, France–which says neighborhoods should have most daily amenities accessible within 15 minutes by walk, bike, or public transit. Easy access to markets, parks, and other public spaces, all within a “15-minute” community, can: 🔹 Foster community connection 🔹 Strengthen the local economy 🔹 Eliminate food deserts 🔹 Reduce carbon emissions Learn more about equitable and sustainable urban development, and explore other stories from the field: https://lnkd.in/eZsuT9bf
