🌏 The systemic challenges faced by societies around the world require transformative action by governments. The understanding of this has led to an increased emphasis and recognition of the importance of strategic foresight as part of policy and decision-making. Without the ability to anticipate, grasp future possibilities and navigate long-term horizons, our action is diluted to reaction. Following this narrative, Demos Helsinki together with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy are organising a training programme “Anticipatory Policy Innovation and Decision Making” in September for policymakers, government innovators and civil servants with a genuine interest in anticipatory governance. During this programme the participants will: 💡 Gain increased confidence and capability to drive policy innovation and anticipatory decision-making in respective organizations 💡 Co-create and develop new and better foresight practices and anticipatory planning processes within organisation 💡 Learn first-hand from internationally recognized inspirational practices and insightful dialogue 💡 Become a part of a global community of foresight practitioners The program will run on 17, 19, 24, 26 Sep 2024 (Tuesdays and Thursdays) Application Deadline: 23 Aug 2024 Read more on the website: https://lnkd.in/d8bufaGZ and contact us if you have any questions!

The idea of 'trust in government' comes up time and time again, and this got me thinking about how trust is hard to give in a time of uncertainty with many unknowns. Just as we are examining and reconfiguring many other elements of how society works and actors connect, does the way we think about trust in government also need to adjust to the times we live in? This piece briefly explores the current status of trust in government (according to the OECD's first Trust Survey), the role of perception and feelings in trust, how trust intersects with other dynamics, and how new dynamics may affect what it means to trust in government today.

How can public administration harness technological development to promote key societal goals, such as green transition? 💡 What strategies ensure that research and innovation (R&I) policy is effective towards such ends while maintaining technology neutrality? The answers can be explored in the newly released final report of VN Teas TYSTI research project! 📄🚀 The TYSTI project, started at the beginning of 2023, focused on technology neutrality and the promotion of society’s strategic objectives, especially in the regulation and funding of emerging technologies. In the collaboration between Demos Helsinki, Aalto University, 4FRONT, and an esteemed international panel of academic experts, the goal has been to build a robust knowledge base to enhance Finland's R&I policy by exploring the practical application of the principle of technology neutrality. Key highlights from the final report include: - Analyzing the relevance of technology neutrality and emerging technologies for R&I policy - Mapping technology neutrality in regulation and funding of emerging technologies in Finland - Establishing a national framework for making strategic choices in R&I policy - Providing actionable policy recommendations Consortia and international advisory panel: Ville Takala, PhD, Research Fellow, UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose and Hanken School of Economics; Karin Väyrynen, PhD, Associate Professor, University of Oulu, INTERACT research group; Susana Borrás, Ph.D, Prof., Copenhagen Business School; Mervi Karikorpi, FL, Head, EU Innovation and Industrial Policy, ex-tech industry; Hille Hinsberg, MA, Proud Engineers; Totti Könnölä, PhD, Professor, University of Alcalá The report is available in Finnish, while the policy brief is provided in both Finnish and English. 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐦𝐚𝐩𝐬: 𝐀 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬 🐛🍄 Stakeholders from 13 countries, invited by LIKE-A-PRO project partners, created seventeen detailed system maps to figure out what pieces can help shift things toward more sustainable and alternative protein foods (APF). The maps were more like diagrams showing how individual-level factors, environmental issues, social dynamics, and economic factors all fit together in the context of APF adoption. Those determinants all work together in a whole system. We found “leverage points” in those maps, which are certain spots where a little nudge can make a big difference in the system. Below you can see an example of a map, which was developed during a system mapping workshops in Denmark. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬? First of all, knowledge was an important determinant. Whether it’s knowing more about APFs or educating others about it, having access to information can be a game changer. Then there was social support, if people were encouraged to try APF and saw others do the same it made a real impact. Also, advertising, promotion, and actions of influencers played a role. These can impact people’s choices without them even realizing it. Beyond that, other factors like legal regulations, perceptions of APF as healthy and ethical food, and even fear of trying new foods can play a role. And let’s not forget about economic factors like the costs of living in a certain country and the prices of APF were rated by stakeholders as super important. 👉In the end, there was one important conclusion: consumers are at the heart of the food system. If they are on board with APF, the whole system could shift towards a more sustainable future. So, whether it is through education, social support, or a little push from influencers, the journey toward a greener plate starts with every one of us.

Since the beginning of 2024, we have been collaborating with Bloomberg Philanthropies on the field of city innovation. Together, we’re exploring how cities can be supported to embed innovation at the heart of their government to facilitate experimentation and address complex challenges. Discussion of this recently expanded at a two-day event in London, jointly organised by Demos Helsinki and Christian Bason, Ph.D. and Sune Knudsen from the @Transition Collective. The event focused on discussing and visioning the future of city innovation in Europe together with 60 participants representing Europe’s foremost organisations in this field. This included leading thinkers such as Sir Geoff Mulgan from TIAL/UCL, and representatives from international organisations and networks (UNDP, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC, Eurocities) and academia (UCL, LSE Cities), NetZeroCitiesEU and more. Thank you to all participants for your invaluable contributions! Three takeaways from the event: 💬 Cities are advancing greatly in using innovation to tackle challenges, yet there is further to push. The next developments involve deeper exploration of the governance needed to enable innovation, citizen engagement strategies, systematic learning with new technologies, and empowering storytelling of cities’ journeys. 🚀 We were honoured to contribute to this group of thinkers who are humbly and purposefully dedicated to catalysing innovation movements in Europe and beyond.  🛤️ This conversation and work is not new; however, we are beginning new collaborative pathways together. Much more will continue in the following months! If you have any questions or insights on city innovation, we're eager to hear more! #cityinnovation #urbandevelopment #collaboration
