About Us

Services for the UnderServed (S:US) believes every New Yorker has the right to lead a life of purpose. Since 1978, S:US has been turning this belief into reality by advocating for people with life circumstances marked by homelessness, intellectual/developmental disability, behavioral health and addiction challenges, poverty, criminal justice involvement, and trauma. Our dedicated workforce of 2,400 provides services and supports to transform the lives of 35,000 individuals and families in New York City and Long Island.

About the Role

The Program Coordinator provides a key support role to SUS Urban Farms, a comprehensive therapeutic horticulture program for individuals with disabilities. The position is directly responsible for engaging program participants in landscaping services at various locations throughout New York City. The position is ideal for a candidate with strong project management skills, flexibility, and compassion who is seeking a unique opportunity to apply their horticultural knowledge to improve the lives of underserved New Yorkers.

What You're Gonna Do

The Program Coordinator will provide supervision, coaching, and support to program participants in activities that include, but are not limited to, maintenance tasks (lawn care, weeding, pruning, raking, etc), installation tasks (planting, basic carpentry construction, basic masonry construction, etc), and other general horticultural tasks (mulching, composting, organic pest management, etc). The Program Coordinator will submit regular reports that track the progress of participants in developing vocational skills and achieving personal goals. The Program Coordinator will also be responsible for the logistics of landscaping services for assigned locations (material procurement, equipment maintenance, etc). The position may require occasional support for other Urban Farms programming, such as assisting with workshops and training sessions, assisting with community farm activities (including harvesting, product development, and farmers’ market participation), and assisting with special events and activities (including an annual Harvest Luncheon celebration).

About You

The Program Coordinator must have: - A minimum of 2 years of experience in a landscaping or horticultural role, with a demonstrated knowledge of standard horticultural practices and of basic landscaping equipment use/maintenance. - Demonstrated interest in working with individuals with disabilities, especially in an employment or educational setting. - Strong writing skills and technical skills (the position will require daily reporting through digital platforms). - A NYS driver’s license and comfort in driving throughout NYC. The Program Coordinator is preferred to have: - A degree or professional certificate in horticulture, agriculture, or a similar field. - 2 years of experience in working directly with individuals with disabilities, especially in an employment or educational setting (such as a job coach, teaching assistant, or direct care professional role). - Spanish language proficiency (will be ideal, but not required).
