About the Role

We are looking to hire a Data Scientist to join our data science team within the Data & Demonstrators Team. As well as providing computer science, engineering and statistical input to our innovation process, you will specifically augment our urban analytical and modelling capabilities. You will work in multi-disciplinary project teams with scientists, service designers, insight specialists and developers, helping us to build our unique combination of capabilities around science and design. Your work will inspire and support the full spectrum of Future Cities Catapult stakeholders, visitors and collaborators. As part of an organisation with a variety of research and development projects in the pipeline, you will be comfortable working on a wide range of technical, analytical and communication based tasks, contributing your skills across our project teams.

What You're Gonna Do

- Design and conduct analytical studies that meet the needs of our projects. This usually involves working with our project partners to understand what will be effective and feasible, establishing and exploring the underlying hypothesis, planning the analyses, and implementing and evaluating them. - Research and build software prototypes and simulation capabilities for the Delivery function (alongside our development team). - Support our work on our organisational themes by ensuring the latest in Urban Data Science research influences our work. - Fulfil some of our research and data systems engineering commitments in our UK/EU/globally funded research projects on information infrastructure and helping cities derive value from data. - Communicate our research and development work effectively to a range of external stakeholders, as well as establish and build relationships with key external researchers.

About You

Essential requirements: - PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics or something equivalently numerate. Under exceptional circumstances strong Master’s degree with additional relevant workplace experience would also be considered. - Significant work experience outside academia, applying data analytics and/or modelling and ideally to commercial applications. - Experience in writing code for research and prototyping purposes in languages like R, Python, Java, Matlab, C++, etc. - Experience in leading research work, both individually and of a team of fellow scientists. Desirable: - Experience of working with urban data on city-scale problems. - Experience in industrial software engineering. - Experience of working with Agile development teams. - Ability to apply advanced statistical modelling techniques to real-world problems. - Ability to apply machine learning techniques to very large data sources. - Ability to thrive in a dynamic new innovation organisation with a fast-paced environment and provide high-quality support to a wide variety of project stakeholders. - Ability to effectively communicate data models, modifications and findings to project team, helping to deliver consistently good outputs. - Experience working in project base environment, ability to handle multiple projects effectively managing time and delivery. - Experience working or genuine interest in Integrated Urban Planning, data standards, information infrastructure and best practice; Healthy Cities, environmental and medical data, impact models; Urban Mobility, multimodal data, transport system modelling.
