About Us

The Curry Stone Design Collaborative (CSDC) is a design studio created to equip underserved and marginalised communities with methods to design, develop and improve their built environments. Working in India since 2016, CDSC operates as a true collective of social design practices, architects and civic planners working collaboratively with communities in need. It unites design practitioners and communities in a common cause: addressing inequalities using design and technical tools.

About the Role

Based in Mumbai, the research associate will report to the Managing Director. The primary responsibility will be to support the research and development of various initiatives within CSDC.

What You're Gonna Do

- Work with communities to create planning documents with proficiency in layout and consistency, - Prepare graphics, drawings and renderings in support of planning activities to communicate complex concepts to the communities, partner organisations and other stakeholders - Design and develop planning studies and compile completed reports - Travel on a regular basis for site visits and nurture community and partner relationships - Work in a participatory method to serve initiatives carried out in the studio

About You

- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree from an accredited university in Architecture and/or Urban Design - 3+ years of work experience. Work experience in non-profits or socially driven practices is a plus. - Possess excellent design skills - Have a firm grasp over land use planning, landscape architecture, building massing and other tenets of urban design - Understand how people experience space in rural, semi-urban and densely urban environments - Ability to use the following: AutoCAD, GIS, Adobe CS (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) - Ability to converse fluently and read in English and preferably in one or more Indian languages - Ability to work in a very collaborative manner with community partners - Be respectful of the local value system, and work with people at all levels in the communities we go into - Must have a great sense of humour, patience, reliability and integrity - Lots of common sense and a deep desire to learn and grow - A proactive approach with a strong work ethic - An ability to work in a start-up environment, take initiative and have a willingness to stand up for their beliefs - Keen interest in socially conscious and sustainable practices
