About us
Trees for Cities is the only independent charity working on a global scale focused entirely on planting urban trees, inspiring children to grow and eat good food and providing volunteering opportunities to bring local people together. Since our inception we have engaged over 80,000 volunteers to plant over 800,000 trees focusing on health, food security, environmental protection, and providing opportunities for education and learning through our Edible Playground and Urban Forest programmes. Our vision to plant trees in cities is global. However, we know the importance of a local focus – we empower and work with local people to strengthen their community. We are a game-changing, ambitious organisation which sets the standard for urban tree planting worldwide.

"After a 60 minutes walk in nature, the amygdala (the part of the brain that deals with stress and creates fear) actually reduces in size." 🍃 Being out in nature has been shown to help reduce anxiety and depression. You don't need to hike out to the middle of a forest to feel the benefits either, our brains get a little boost even just looking at city trees and flowers! In line with this year's Mental Health Awareness Week theme 'Moving more for mental health', we encourage you to explore your local urban green space 🌳🚶♀️ Listen to Dr William Bird MBE's talk here: https://lnkd.in/dUmHkW8x

"The children are overexcited at first but after two minutes they calm down. They are busy in the soil, it’s grounding for them." - Staff member at Cardiff school 🍃 The UK is currently grappling with a significant mental health crisis, especially in young children. Among the various factors contributing to this decline, Nature Deficit Disorder has emerged as a concern. 💚📉 A lack of connection to nature can have a detrimental impact on mental wellbeing. Through our Edible Playgrounds in schools, we can see how greener playgrounds can help improve students' mental wellbeing. Read the case study below to learn our findings: https://lnkd.in/eXsKzx68 #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

How can trees support mental wellbeing? 🌳 Trees are calming 😌 They provide a sense of comfort and serenity in our busy lives. Being out in nature has been shown to help reduce anxiety and depression, even if it's just a twenty-minute walk 🚶 In line with this year's Mental Health Awareness Week theme 'Moving more for mental health', explore your urban green spaces and encourage others to discover their local nature too. 🏙️ With over 80% of the UK population living in towns and cities, let’s work together to prioritise equal access to urban trees and green spaces for all. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #MomentsForMovement Mental Health Foundation Mental Health UK

Last Autumn, students from Robert Browning School, one of our first Healthy Playground projects in London, sold their food garden produce at Borough Market! 🌿🥕 The pupils joined other schools from the area to sell their veg at the market, all in the name of raising money for School Food Matters. 🌱 Our Healthy Playgrounds programme is where we reimagine urban school playgrounds and turn them into fun and educational green spaces. Learn more about how the greener playground connected more pupils with food growing and nature: https://lnkd.in/edbuUPPF This project was funded by Southwark Council via The Cleaner Greener Safer grant, Bupa and Kusuma Trust UK.
