This is a significant step forward in safeguarding vital ecosystems and ensuring equitable access to outdoor spaces for millions. “The San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, serving as the backyard to the nation’s second-largest urban center and the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, with its rich biodiversity and deep cultural significance, are invaluable assets that contribute to the well-being of communities and flora and fauna alike,” said Guillermo Rodriguez, Vice President Pacific Region, California State Director for Trust for Public Land. The process of returning land, resources, and cultural heritage to Indigenous communities brings numerous benefits, including supporting the conservation of lands for climate resilience and biodiversity. We’re working with the Penobscot Nation to return about 30,000 acres located within the heart of the Nation’s ancestral hunting and fishing territories, known as Wáhsehtəkʷ. Read about how this stewardship of the land will benefit all: https://lnkd.in/eCykSqtC

The steep streets of Bayview–Hunters Point rise to a crest, from which you can see the light glimmer off the San Francisco Bay on one side and a rush of cars on the Bayshore Freeway on the other. From this vantage point, the neighborhood feels like an island. Historically, it has been treated as one: built around the World War II shipbuilding industry, Bayview–Hunters Point grew into a predominantly Black neighborhood that has since been isolated by decades of discrimination. Like the trailblazing women who came before them, a new cadre of leaders is working to change that. They won’t rest until racial equality and economic justice deliver decent housing, education, job opportunities, and a healthy environment to people and families who’ve called this community home for generations.
