Back in 1995 I questioned the idea of the '24hr city' as an unalloyed philosophical good. It is a misunderstood term that, more than ever, is sprayed about without the careful unpacking it needs. Design Trust for Public Space organized a great event around the new Setha Low book “Why Public Space Matters” moderated by Quilian Riano with respondants Matthew Clarke and Ya-Ting Liu last night: Why does public space matter? That was discussed throughout an animated evening with a full house at AIA New York | Center for Architecture. Ya-Ting Liu focused on implementation - and the complexity of getting things done in government. I queried about her point of view and the role of the city in creating a program of pilots with a view to permanence. Of course, NYC is testing a number of approaches to public space.
