Special Mention for KMSKA at the EMYA2024 by the European Museum Forum As the main art museum in southern Flanders, the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen (KMSKA) reopened its doors in 2022 after over a decade of renovation. The newly refurbished 19th-century building renovated by KAAN Architecten presents new opportunities to discover its renowned Flemish and Belgian, as well as international artists from the 14th to the 20th centuries. The museum’s reinvented approach, working and collaborating with local communities, offers new connections between the art on display and its visitors. It encourages more tailored experiences where traditional displays of masterpieces are put alongside more contemporary and often whimsical visual arts. The museum has purposely foregone the traditional mission statement, preferring not to convey a definitive meaning or message as an institution but to leave room for dialogue, feeling, playing, experimenting, and creating. KMSKA also cooperates with universities, research centres, scientific working groups, and other museums to advance scientific research on art and visual culture conservation. We thank the European Museum Forum for this recognition: "The following special commendation goes to an art museum that demonstrates a commitment to rethinking the art institution as a place for dialogue, feeling, playing, experimenting, and creating. Crafting Diversity: The Stack's Architectural Precision In this KAAN Architecten's project, our aim of achieving a balance between individuality and community led us to put much effort into detail. The design aims to minimize repetition within the project, and we strategically optimized setback measurements within an 800 mm sub-grid to enhance the connections between balconies, terraces, and the facade, simplifying these elements without compromising their dynamic aesthetic. Allard Assies from KAAN Architecten: ”When we started working on the design for The Stack, the brief called for a wide variety of house floor plans (large and small) and large living balconies. Variety implies movement and variation in the facade. We opted for a brutalist concrete architecture. This enabled us to work with large cantilever balconies and varying depths in the façade. Contrary to the concept, variety requires rationalisation and standardisation. Thus, the entire façade is based on the 1125x1125mm grid, and the balconies have consecutive sizes of 800, 1.600, and 2.400mm. The house plans are formed around a fixed core with shaft, toilet, meter cupboard, ventilation, and heat-cooling unit. The choice of grid and standards allowed us to work with a limited number of basic details. The precast concrete facade parts and balconies were based on the same principles and dimensions. This made the entire construction economically feasible, and we look back on a successful project with a large façade variation”. Last chance to vote for Museum Paleis Het Loo! The voting closes tomorrow.
Paleis Het Loo nominated for the BNA Beste Gebouw van het Jaar 2024! Paleis Het Loo, a baroque hunting palace on the outskirts of Apeldoorn, has undergone an ambitious transformation involving the addition of over 5000 square metres of new facilities and spaces and carefully restoring the palace. Seamlessly integrated into the existing site, the extension is placed underground, and a new water feature was incorporated as part of the design, maintaining the baroque composition of lush gardens and water elements. We are very enthusiastic to announce that Museum Paleis Het Loo has been nominated for the prestigious BNA Beste Gebouw van het Jaar 2024! Out of almost 100 entries, Paleis Het Loo has become one of the final 11 nominees and one of the top 3 in the "Identiteit en Icoonwaarde" category! The Stack: Architecture as a conduit for personal expression. The development of Aan het IJ north of Amsterdam's city centre embodies the balance between individuality and community. Situated within Geurst & Schulze architecten 2003 master plan, The Stack celebrates urban living in the new neighbourhood. The design aims to minimize repetition within the project. KAAN Architecten explored two key elements to produce this diversity: different outside spaces, and a variety of apartment layouts. It results in 120 distinctive, spacious apartments housed in two interconnected villas that share a deck and a garden. The project emphasises the relationship between neighbourhood and home. Taken that as key features of the master plan, it includes gracefully contoured buildings that offer panoramic views and a generous sense of space. Although entirely different, both blocks share a coherent visual identity. We thank the design team, client and all collaborators for this wonderful result! Join us today for the first day of the AMS Institute's scientific congress Reinventing the City! Renata Gilio, Managing Director at KAAN Architecten, together with co-hosts Manuela Triggianese, Halina Zarate, Seyran Khademi and Lydia Giokari present the workshop Data Hub for Low Carbon Stations. The AMS Scientific Conference (AMS Conference) explores and discusses how cities can transform themselves to become more livable, resilient and sustainable, while offering economic stability. In this context the workshop session will delve into the multifaceted data available in and around stations. This includes building data (construction drawings, materials, structural weight), passenger data (from social media posts), aerial imagery (urban growth and development), mobility data, energy consumption metrics, and urban data related to the built environment. The workshop will emphasize the gathering of visual data related to carbon footprint of stations, at the building scale. This workshop is a spin-of Halina's PHD research and her new released "The Low-Carbon Stations Data-hub" and Manuela Triggianese's long standing research in (train) stations design at TUDelft.
