OMA and UniFor will showcase the PRINCIPLES collection in Australia for the first time during the Perth Design Week (14 – 21 March). The collection will form the PRINCIPLES Square at the Cathedral Square in Perth’s city center. The PRINCIPLES Square will be the central hub for the design festival, hosting a series of outdoor public activities including talks on design related topics, workshops, film screenings, and book readings. OMA and UniFor have worked in close collaboration since 2018 to design the furniture for the Axel Springer campus in Berlin. The collection was eventually developed into the PRINCIPLES collection, which was launched at the Milan Design Week 2022. The PRINCIPLES furniture collection by OMA provides furnishings that can be used by anyone, at any time, to best support the needs of the contemporary workplace and institutions – such as universities and libraries. The PRINCIPLES Square takes advantage of the flexibility offered by PRINCIPLES to support different activities during the Perth Design Week. OMA, UniFor and Perth Design Week have curated a public program with over 20 events at the PRINCIPLES Square. We invite you to sign up for our events. https://lnkd.in/efUkVx5i

Apollolaan 171 – Amsterdam’s latest high-end office building – opens for business today. Designed by OMA / David Gianotten on behalf of Kroonenberg Groep, the office architecture is defined by transparency and tactility, and responds to Berlage’s architecture from the early twentieth century in the neighborhood. Lesley Bamberger, CEO Kroonenberg Groep: “At this prominent location on Apollolaan, we have together created a beautiful office building that makes a significant impact on the entire neighborhood. The design is tailored to its surroundings and provides a very natural integration. We take pride in this wonderful addition to the city.” David Gianotten, OMA Managing Partner – Architect: “Around Apollolaan 171 is a mix of boutique office buildings, housing, and luxury hotels. Our core intention is to connect the new architecture with the lively neighborhood through form and materiality, in contrast to the original JP Morgan building that was more isolated due to the bank’s security needs. In our design, the interlocking glass volumes along Apollolaan 171 give the building an inviting character, while the brick façade facing the residential Titiaanstraat evokes the historical architecture of Berlage.” The construction of the building was led by JP van Eesteren, with the project management overseen by vb&t Projectmanagement bv. de Architekten Cie. was responsible for the technical and executive design, in collaboration with OMA. OMA’s design team was led by David Gianotten and Project Architects Vincent Kersten and Michael den Otter. https://lnkd.in/ePr_FsjP

Jimmy van der Aa (Studio A Kwadraat), together with David Gianotten and Michael den Otter (OMA), as part of the Schools by Circlewood consortium, have won the competition to design the Wisperweide school in Weesp. Wisperweide, which offers pre- and after school care, is the first school applying Schools by Circlewood’s prefabricated wooden modular system – which has been adopted by the City of Amsterdam earlier this year as one of the bases to build multiple elementary schools. The Wisperweide School design competition jury: “The design has a ‘wow’ factor and is unique, fully matching the school’s identity as intended. It is modern with a natural look.” Schools by Circlewood’s plug and play system (the HoutKern Construction Method) consists of standardized wooden columns, cross-laminated wooden floor panels, smart steel joints, and movable partitions. Wisperweide’s design uses the system to achieve maximum flexibility – both daily and in the long term. Central to the compact building is an auditorium, which is the school’s main gathering and event space visible to most parts of the school. Schools by Circlewood consists of Noordereng Groep, Oosterhoff (ABT, Adviesbureau Lüning, bbn adviseurs), Studio A Kwadraat, Adviesbureau DWA, Hedgehog Company, Heko Spanten Ede B.V., EtuConsult BV, Lomans, Ferross Staalbouw, and OMA. As Schools by Circlewood’s Creative Director, OMA helps to select young designers, and develop in collaboration with them new schools. Studio A Kwadraat is the first selected school designer. The Wisperweide school will be constructed by Friso Bouwgroep. https://lnkd.in/e_UEYTKc

Chris van Duijn has won the competition to design the new campus of Hongik University in Seoul. The scheme will add a cluster of interwoven buildings and public spaces that meld with the existing topography, aiming to strengthen the connection between the university and the city. “The new Hongik campus adds another chapter to OMA’s involvement in cultural projects in Seoul. This is a project that shies away from conventional labels: it is a building, a masterplan and landscape design all at once. It purposely avoids to stand out and invites to be discovered gradually. In doing so, it aims to reestablish the connection the university once had with the neighborhood.” Chris van Duijn, Partner at OMA Images by Negativ https://lnkd.in/e5ts7JVq

OMA’s David Gianotten and Chiaju Lin have designed the Metropolitan Village in Taipei – a high-rise residential tower in the Xinyi central business district. The 23-storey building is a vertical village shaped by the increasingly fluid boundary between living and working in post-pandemic Taipei, and the city’s diverse urban conditions.   The Metropolitan Village consists of volumes that share a central services core. The volumes – each with a distinctive façade – interlock with each other to create more than 30 different living unit types that support various post-pandemic lifestyles. The building has shared facilities on different floors, which create layers of social spaces in Taipei.   The building site is defined by the front and back sides that are distinctive in scale and character: the front side faces a 40m wide main road of the Xinyi commercial area; the back side is a 6m wide street within the Wenchang district infused with local daily activities. The volumes forming the Metropolitan Village respond to the different proportions of the buildings in Xinyi and Wenchang.   The main façade is composed of a curtain wall system and aluminum panels that form a durable skin for the machine for living in. Where the living spaces that require minimal privacy are located, patterned glass – commonly used in the interior of old Taiwanese apartments as partitions – has been used for the balustrades. Activities behind the patterned glass become a mosaic indicative of domesticity. The project is scheduled for completion in 2027.   Images by WAX Architectural Visualizations https://lnkd.in/eB3q3fYQ
