Creative expertise in data-driven architecture & urban planning.
About us
Space Syntax provides creative expertise in architecture & urban planning. Operating worldwide, we combine global design experience with advanced digital technologies. Our unique modelling tools forecast the social, economic & environmental impacts of development on mobility, land value & health at all scales. We provide creative urban planning and building design expertise in five key areas: STUDIO From individual buildings to entire cities, we create compelling visions of the future that enhance the lives of the people that use them. With over 30 years of global experience, we assemble & lead expert teams, covering all aspects of urban planning & design and building on rigorous. CONSULTING We deliver expert urban planning & design advice at all stages of the project lifecycle: from site assessment & policy review to design evaluation & in-use appraisal. Our focus on people & place adds value to planning & design strategies. We support projects with evidence rich insights that guide decision-takers. TRAINING We train individuals & organisations in the use of the Space Syntax approach: from executive training events to advanced-user courses. Our training packages cover the urban planning & design principles we work to, as well as the computational tools we employ in professional practice. RESEARCH Through in-house research, as well as partnerships with academic institutions worldwide, we investigate the fundamental issues that will shape the future of buildings & urban places. With a focus on the climate emergency, health & social inequalities, we address the questions raised by global practice. DIGITAL We develop digital modelling tools to measure the social, economic & environmental potential of buildings, neighbourhoods & urban regions. Our work addresses the ‘smart cities’ technology challenges of delivering low carbon performance, healthy living & access to opportunities.

AT THE CUTTING EDGE OF NEUROSCIENCE AND ARCHITECTURE The recent Humanise symposium was our first step in a 10-year programme to reveal the impact of the outside of buildings on public health and civic life. The Humanise campaign is now working with several eminent research partners to commission and publish new studies. These include an analysis of people’s physiological responses to the outside of buildings as well as one of the most extensive investigations ever undertaken into the influence of building design on human emotions. Keep an eye out for the forthcoming publications of these findings, which we will be sharing via special issues of the Humanise mailer this summer and autumn of 2024. Subscribe here: https://lnkd.in/e9e63dxQ Meet the minds behind the research: 👉 Cleo Valentine, Vice Chancellor's Doctoral Scholar at the University of Cambridge, is exploring 'The Impact of Visual Complexity in Architectural Facades on Neurophysiology'. 👉 Professor Colin Ellard, from the Urban Realities Laboratory at the University of Waterloo, is embarking on a cross-city exploration in Toronto, Canada, and London, UK, examining 'The Impact of Boring Buildings on Psychological State'. 👉 Ed Parham and Tim Stonor of Space Syntax are dedicated to quantifying human interactions with buildings, both internally and externally. You can read further on these innovative studies via the Humanise blog: https://lnkd.in/eRKJ3VfG

🔐Ever wondered how authorities, operators and governments, manage the influence of public perception on security threats in connected places? How do we find the trade-off between a sustainable (secure) connected place and frictionless experiences for members of the public? And What’s next for the future of connected places? Our panel in the PETRAS summit comprising Gideon Ogunniye (UCL), Liam O'Brien (Department for Science, Innovation and Technology), Ben Edginton-Thomas (Plexal), Julie McCann (Imperial College London), and Ed Parham (Space Syntax) answered this, and many such questions. Watch now to find out: https://lnkd.in/dPVgd9CZ

Sketches for a project to rethink the ‘trade show’. What if trade events were built around vibrant kitchens, fresh food and conversations instead of endless booths and dull catering? What if you could travel the length and breadth of an expo by gondola, holding meetings as you go and taking in a landscape of giant screens? What if all of this could be taken down, transported and rebuilt? What if a trade show was more like a circus and less like a mausoleum? #SpaceSyntax #Sketch #Rethink #Design

OUR HISTORY | Space Syntax was established on 17th July 1989 to apply the 'space syntax' approach in urban planning & design practice. The 'space syntax' approach | Pioneered in the 1970s & 80s by Professors Bill Hillier, Julienne Hanson & Alan Penn at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, the 'space syntax' approach was conceived to help simulate the likely effects of urban planning & architectural design proposals on the people who occupied & moved around in them. Space Syntax today | We are an employee-owned, purpose-driven organisation, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Applying our science-based & human-focused approach, we have developed a wide range of services that help our clients & partners deliver sustainable buildings & urban places. Our 5 service streams: Studio Creating compelling visions of a sustainable, liveable & healthy future. Consulting Giving insights & advice at all stages of the project lifecycle. Research Investigating the key issues that will shape the future. Training Providing training via face-to-face & online courses. Digital Making software-based planning tools & data products. We are committed to making a positive impact on public health, climate, ecology & social inequality. #SpaceSyntax #UnitedNations #SustainableDevelopmentGoals #UCL #TheBartlett #employeeownership #urbanplanning #architecturaldesign Follow us Space Syntax for further information on our unique, data-driven approach to the planning & design of buildings & urban places, and our passion for the de-risking & optimisation of strategies that deliver long-term social, economic & environmental outcomes.

How do we support our clients? Collaborating with public, private & community groups, we use digital modelling tools to create thriving urban spaces. From strategic spatial models to detailed micro-simulations, we focus on optimising the human experience in buildings & cities, including workplace, retail, leisure, healthcare, culture, education & government spaces. Projects | City & regional scale Urban planning & design strategies that deliver sustainable spatial, land use & transport outcomes. National, regional & urban masterplans. Projects | Property developments Place-based walking, cycling & public realm strategies. Urban masterplanning, public space design & land value modelling. Projects | Buildings & estates User-efficient layout designs that drive organisational performance. Space planning & user flow design. “I know that these techniques work from the tough environment of practice. I love the world of analysis, observation, of research, but also passion, imprecision, the hunch. Space Syntax is the testing of the interaction of these opposing worlds,” said Norman Foster, Founder & Executive chairman, Foster + Partners. See how we can make space work better for you. I’ll be at #MIPIM from Tuesday, 12th to Thursday, 14th March. It’s always a good time to meet new people and to reconnect with old friends: an opportunity to check the pulse of the real estate industry and to learn about trends in design and development. And of course to speak about our work at Space Syntax, whether that’s strategic urban planning, place carbon analysis, walkability modelling or building interaction design. Let me know if you’re going so we can catch up... #urbanplanning #carbon #walkability #interaction #realestate
