The Global Overview module of Renewables 2024 Global Status Report #GSR2024 is out! What does the report say – 👉🏼 While renewables are increasing in the overall energy mix and provided around 13% of the global total final energy we consumed in 2022, they are not replacing coal, oil and gas fast enough. 87% of energy demand growth between 2021 and 2022 was covered by fossil fuels. 👉🏼 We are consuming more energy and burning more fossil fuels than ever! This is spewing more global energy-related emissions, with a 1.1% increase in 2023 - exacerbating climate change and delaying sustainable development. 👉🏼 Strong policies and legal frameworks work. We achieved record success in the power sector for the 22nd consecutive year. But, the 473 GW added in 2023 still falls short of the 1,000 GW needed annually to meet climate and development goals. The success story of the power sector must be replicated in all sectors to shift to fair and equitable renewables-based economies.  👉🏼Governments are showing more ambition, but action is lagging behind. 170 countries had renewable power targets in 2023, 151 have net zero targets, and only 90 countries have economy-wide renewable energy targets, yet they are not on track to meet them. 👉🏼Renewable energy projects are significantly more expensive in developing countries. The glaring disparity in the cost of capital, ranging from less than 4% in advanced economies to more than 10% in emerging economies is exacerbating inequality and preventing millions from reaping the social and economic benefits of the shift to renewables 👉🏼Investments in renewables are still insufficient. While governments pledged to triple renewable capacity and double energy efficiency improvements by 2030 at COP28, annual investments are still less than half of the USD 1350 billion required to meet these targets. 👉🏼We are not building the infrastructure and providing the finance and permitting fast enough, 3,000 GW of renewable projects remain unutilised and underdeveloped as a result. 👉🏼Renewables are still not competing on a level playing field as fossil fuel subsidies soar. G20 countries’ subsidies for fossil fuels reached a record USD 1.3 trillion in 2022 and globally, direct and indirect subsidies amounted to USD 7 trillion. 📣The findings have a clear call to action – For an equitable and just energy transition we need an urgent focus on renewable energy enablers like policies, permitting, and finance. 👀Read the report here – https://lnkd.in/duSRNtQ #RenewablesNow #REbootTheWorld

“The energy transition needs to be an economic story that we win!” -- Rana Adib at International Energy Agency (IEA) Global Summit on People-Centred Energy Transitions. We have still not installed even half of the renewable energy capacity needed to reach climate goals. We don’t have a choice but to accelerate the pace of the energy transition. It’s important to recognise that while the energy transition will be a societal change, it must also be an economic victory. The harsh reality is that our global economy is built around fossil fuels. Fossil fuels might have been the backbone of our economy, but it's time to show that renewables can do the job better. We have some tension points to iron out – speed vs. collaboration, scale vs. sustainability, and decentralisation: local vs. global. But the crux of the issue remains – how do we integrate social value with economic value? For this, governments need to develop highly integrated planning and policies that require coordination across different ministries. When we look back at the renewable projects doing well, what stands out is a multi-stakeholder approach deeply anchored in the governance of organisations and processes. #REbootTheWorld #RenewablesNow

Fossil fuel industries and lobbies are locking us into avoidable emissions! Powerful remarks by Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris, today at the International Energy Agency (IEA) Global Summit on People-Centred Clean Energy Transitions, showcasing how they are holding us back from rapid renewable energy deployment. “I know how difficult it is – I experienced it firsthand in my first months as Mayor of Paris. I was threatened by lobbies who came to see me -- “You have to stop, you must stop talking about combustion engines. Stop talking about the transition to electricity or hydrogen.” These lobbyists said if you don’t do this, we’ll make sure you shall lose the next elections. I told him you’re no doubt very powerful, but one day you will be before the judges because you are poisoning people. And I prefer to be on the right side of history.” Renewables are the only way ahead. #REbootTheWorld #RenewablesNow

Nine governments joined us bright and early this morning at the #IRENA14A General Assembly for a spirited discussion! It was encouraging to see the commitment and enthusiasm for multi-stakeholder networks and dialogue, which are more valuable now than ever. With the energy transition gathering pace, we’re also seeing the bottlenecks and barriers become more complex. It is clear that we need fresh thinking and close collaboration. It’s not only about deploying renewable power, but reimagining finance, reskilling the workforce, reshaping supply chains, and redefining industry norms. And here’s where REN21 comes in – with strong connections and open discussions among our members laying the groundwork for advancing our shared understanding of these issues. We look forward to continuing to build on our collective intelligence and commitment to drive meaningful progress. Together, we can overcome the complexities ahead and accelerate the transition to #RenewablesNow. #REbootTheWorld International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)
