The paper titled Caring for Groundwater: How Care Can Expand and Transform Groundwater Governance by different members of the IHE Delft Water Governance Department: Margreet Zwarteveen, Jeltsje Kemerink-Seyoum, Andres Verzijl, Tavengwa Chitata and Carolina Domínguez-Guzmán, was written in collaboration with groundwater 💧 experts in India, Morocco and Algeria, France and the UK. The paper challenges the 'tragedy of the commons' reasoning that dominates groundwater governance. Foregrounding care helps recognize that people’s engagements with groundwater are not just motivated by greed or self-interest, but can also be inspired by solidarity 🤝or concern for the environment 🌱. Groundwater actors may combine strategies to make do with what is available with measures to avoid over-exploitation and conscious investments in conservation and recharge. Our #ESR Paula Andrea Zuluaga Guerra is organising a workshop on this topic for the next 19 June. Paula conducted her research with Fundacion Nueva Cultura del Agua (FNCA, New Water Culture Foundation, focusing on co-producing knowledge in the “Mar Menor Lagoon” in Murcia, Spain. This project involved the development of participatory process inspired in the notion of Transformations Labs in sustainability science and participatory action research, and the decolonial feminist un/reweaving of this process.
