Want to know why agrobiodiversity #conservation is the first essential step towards #climate resilience? One month after the Forest and Farm Producer Organisations’ International Conference on #Agrobiodiversity in Pokhara, Nepal, co-organized by IUCN, Duncan Macqueen from the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), another partner of the Forest and Farm Facility shares his thoughts. ✍ The article identifies three key action points from the conference on how decision-makers can support smallholders and Indigenous Peoples as the custodians of biodiversity: 👩🌾 Recognize the vital traditional knowledge of smallholder farmers and Indigenous Peoples who are crucial for stewarding agrobiodiversity. 💲Disperse international finance mechanisms to empower local groups, learning from successful models such as internally mobilised finance mechanisms run by smallholders themselves. 📃Encourage full participation of farmers in crafting laws and policies that protect Indigenous and peasant seed systems, prioritizing human rights declarations for indigenous peoples and peasant farmers over commercial interests. IUCN co-organized the conference as one of the implementing partners of the Forest and Farm Facility. Read more: https://bit.ly/450L2A9 #ClimateResilience LI-BIRD

By 2050, expected demand for vegetable oils could require a 14% increase in production – potentially threatening biodiversity if natural areas are cleared for vegetable oil crops. While vegetable oils are an important part of a healthy diet, the production of oil crops has a range of environmental and social impacts. How can we limit the impacts of vegetable oils on biodiversity? Our Issues Brief explains ➡️ https://bit.ly/3UMZzeV

Vegetable oil production plays a crucial role in helping feed a growing population, but it also has significant environmental, social, and economic impacts, especially when pursued on an industrial scale. These impacts include deforestation, loss of species and ecosystems, agrochemical pollution and #climate change, all growing as demand for vegetable oils soars. But a new report shows that, with the right investment and improved crop production methods reducing #biodiversity loss and restoring nature could be made possible. Read more https://bit.ly/4a4e3LT

Growing demand for vegetable oils could translate into the conversion of natural areas into farmland, negatively impacting global biodiversity, particularly where biodiverse environments are displaced. But there is potential to limit harms to nature by improving production methods according to a new report released today. Read how here: https://bit.ly/3JU7xN2 The report was produced by IUCN’s Oil Crops Task Force and the Sustainable Nutrition Scientific Board.
