The new East Midtown Greenway from East 53rd to 61st Streets is part of NYC's vision to “close the loop” of the Manhattan Waterfront, providing New Yorkers with continuous waterfront open space around the island. Last night Design Trust Council took a tour alongside the East River with lead designer Stantec, and the @nycedc and NYC Department of Parks & Recreation who are spearheading the East Midtown Waterfront Project, to learn more about the diverse landscapes and ecosystems on the path. In total, the project adds almost 2,000 linear feet of separated bikeway and walkway to an area of Manhattan that needs it most. ** The Design Trust Council is a leadership circle of civic-minded professionals who support the Design Trust for Public Space's mission to make a lasting impact—through design—on public space in NYC. The Design Trust had a fascinating conversation last week about the future of EV charging in New York's public realm. This is space is growing, urgent, and complicated. Conversations need to happen now about how government and the private sector work together on the right solutions—with the right outcomes—in mind. What technologies are top of mind to you that have a potential positive or negative impact on our public realm? Thank you Grant Marani for hosting in RAMSA's incredible venue; Eric Rothman for your generous moderation, and Michael Fresco, Nick Colvin, and Anthony Townsend for your participation!
Last night, Design Trust Council kickstarted the 2024 season with a panel discussion on Technology in the Public Realm, focusing on emerging technologies like EV charging stations, and the challenges and opportunities of these technologies and their impact on New Yorkers’ quality of life. Moderated by Eric Rothman, Co-Chair of HR&A’s Board of Directors and Design Trust’s former Board Chair and featuring panelists: ⚫ Nick Colvin, CEO of Intersection and Design Trust Board Member ⚫ Michael Fresco, Vice President of Corporate Development & General Counsel at Revel ⚫ Dr. Anthony Townsend, President of Star City Group International and Urbanist in Residence at Cornell The Design Trust Council is a leadership circle of civic-minded professionals who support the Design Trust’s mission to make a lasting impact—through design—on public space in NYC. Learn more and join for exclusive access to lectures, launch parties, and exhibitions here: https://lnkd.in/eDP_k72b Our next event is an insider tour of the East Midtown Greenway with the designers and city agencies that made the new waterfront space possible! Happy Earth Day 🌎 Today and every day, public space unites communities and provides access to shared resources. Our built environment is an important tool for mitigating the impacts of climate change, as access to open green space boosts community health and environmental resilience! That's why we have partnered with the Public Housing Community Fund and the Center for Justice Innovation on Green Space Connections, a project that is working with public housing residents to design and activate green spaces, and create a resource guide for empowering a wider reach of New Yorkers, connecting open spaces citywide. I'm really, really proud about this one. Today, the Design Trust for Public Space launched, with Macaulay Honors College at The City University of New York, a wonderful new program called "New York: City Designed." With a mixture of experiential learning, workshop-based problem-solving, internship placements, and in-depth site visits, the program will equip participants with the skills to be agents of change, to access jobs in the planning and design sectors, and to take power as residents of New York City. We're honored to work with Dara N. Byrne, Roblin Meeks, and team on this important initiative. This work is supported by an incredible Advisory Committee, including the NYC Office of the Mayor, HR&A Advisors, Grand Central Partnership, Historic House Trust of New York City, New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, 3x3, Times Square Alliance, NYC Department of City Planning, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, TenBerke, and WXY architecture + urban design. Let's get started! Website: https://lnkd.in/ezvhcqqV Press Release: https://lnkd.in/eVmxppXk
