What does it take to bring a project to life on the ground? Lehtem Buma Carine, climate change, energy & resilience specialist at ICLEI Africa, provides a firsthand perspective from Kisenyi, an informal settlement in Kampala. There, she co-led workshops and engaged with the community on clean cooking solutions. Carine's work is part of the Enabling African Cities for Transformative Energy Access - ENACT project, implemented by #ICLEIAfrica with support from Mercy Corps and Energy 4 Impact. This initiative aims to provide safe, clean, and affordable #CleanCooking and #EnergyAccess to urban informal settlements in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and Kampala, Uganda. 🌍 🔥🍳 Reliance on traditional biomass fuels for meal preparation exposes users, particularly women and children, to toxic pollutant levels. By improving access to clean cooking solutions, the #ENACT project addresses health issues, gender disparities, and climate impacts simultaneously. How does it all come together? Check out the post below to delve into Carine's on-the-ground insights on the crucial role of implementing clean cooking solutions in urban informal settlements. ⬇️
Last week, I was in Kampala, Uganda, where I had the privilege of co-facilitating several workshops and community engagement activities on clean cooking organized under the ENACT project. ENACT is funded by FCDO through its Transforming Energy Access platform, managed by the The Carbon Trust. The project is implemented by ICLEI Africa and Energy 4 Impact - Mercy Corps with support from Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development. During my visit, I interacted with multiple households and cooked-food sellers in #Kisenyi #InformalSettlement, where ENACT is working with service providers such as WANA Energy Solutions - Wesgas and Green Bio Energy Ltd to introduce various clean cooking interventions and technologies, including improved cookstoves with briquettes, Electric Pressure Cookers, and LPG. The positive feedback from adopters of these technologies was truly inspiring. Many households reported significant daily cost savings of up to 75% of their original expenses on charcoal, as well as time savings of up to 75%, reduced exposure to heat and smoke, and the convenience of cooking from anywhere while still spending quality time with family. Some people even mentioned that the food tastes better! David Sheridan Sifa Sirima Leonard N. Another highlight of my trip was participating in a clean cooking exhibition in a market in Kisenyi, led by #UNACC and other ENACT project partners, where I ‘co-cooked’ a local meal, 'Posho' (maize meal), using an Electric Pressure Cooker. This experience left a lasting impression on me, to the extent that upon returning to Cape Town, I prepared a Cameroonian dish, #KokiBeans (black-eyed peas pudding), using an EPC which I had purchased a while back but never used. My time in Kisenyi reinforced my optimism for clean cooking access in Africa, particularly its informal settlements. Some key takeaways for me are summarised below: 1. Lack of awareness at all levels is a significant barrier to the slow progress in the clean cooking sector in #SAA 2. Many (low income) households and businesses, are overspending on inefficient charcoal and firewood stoves for cooking, meanwhile a switch to clean cooking technologies has been proven to save money and time. 3. Engaging and working with local/community leaders is crucial for driving change and achieving sustainable and widespread adoption of clean cooking solutions. The success of ENACT’s activities in #Kisenyi has been thanks to the support of Kisenyi’s local leaders (chairpersons) 4. Collaboration among various stakeholders (national/local government, private sector, community-based organisations, development partners, etc.) is essential for achieving universal access to clean cooking for all SDG7 5. Continued innovation (in the approach used to manufacture, distribute, finance, raise awareness, engage communities etc) is indispensable in scaling up clean cooking access #CleanCooking #Kisenyi #Uganda #KCCA
