IIHS, in collaboration with Coursera, has launched its latest digital blended learning programme. The 5-week self-paced course helps learners understand the why, when, what and how of economic policymaking through a combination of concepts and ideas, cases and examples and thought-provoking discussion questions.

Aseem Inam, Professor and Chair in Urban Design , Cardiff University, introduces the concept of "co-designing publics" by examining what lies at the potent intersection of the public realm and informal urbanisms. He defines the public realm as interconnected spatial and political networks of public spaces that weave a city together, while informal urbanisms are the transactional conditions of ambiguity that exist between what is acceptable and what is unacceptable in cities. He argues that publics are co-designed (i.e. co-created in inventive and multifarious ways) around common concerns or desire through volitional inquiry and action. Through the talk he illustrates how these ideas are being further investigated through case studies in cities around the world and articulated through interactive events in the Co-Designing Publics international research network, funded by a grant from the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Colin McFarlane, Professor of Urban Geography, Durham University, presents a lecture based on his recent book, 'Waste and the City'. He highlights that in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the relationship between the health of the city and good sanitation has never been more important. He argues that sanitation is one of modern urban life’s most neglected issues. This lecture argues for a renewed, equitable investment in sanitation as a foundation of urban social life. Adopting Henri Lefebvre’s concept of ‘the right to the city’, it uses the notion of ‘citylife’ to reframe the discourse on sanitation from a narrowly-defined policy discussion to a question of the democratic right to public life.

The now concluded Knowledge in Action for Urban Equality (KNOW) programme, was an international, four-year research programme led by the Development Planning Unit (DPU) at University College London (UCL). The project focussed on six work packages looking at different aspects. IIHS and DPU co-led Work Package 5 (WP5), which focused on maximising the impact of research in education, particularly focusing on the education of urban practitioners and planners in the Global South.
